Well, day 1 over with. Time seemed to drag on and talk about death from over communication.  I would have never imagined that 15 minutes worth of paperwork could take all day. We started the day with 48 people so lets see what we end up with in three weeks. Their statistics show that 35 will finish. However, in all seriousness, I'm glad to be there and I will be one of the 35 survivors.

There are 8 of us that get to go to the hill on Wednesday while everyone else will be at the Department of Public safety taking tests. The other 7 have their CDL and I have my learner's permit. I got some funny looks from the instructors  when I told them I tested and passed all tests and endorsements when I got my learners permit (it pays to study). That must me an oddity especially when most of the people there from Texas just did the special requirements portion and not all of them passed passed that. I took advantage of many web sites offering free CDL tests on-line so that definitely helped.

It's kind of hard to explain the environment in the classroom right now. I don't know whether to reply yes drill sergeant, no drill sergeant or what. One thing I learned in 20 plus years in the Army, never volunteer anything. If I'm asked, I'll answer and that's all. There is one instructor that constantly asks, "you know where I'm going with this". You guys that went through Stevens training know who I am talking about. I have a lot of respect for that guy but he is predictable with that question. I will call him the Deacon.

What I can say so far is that there are no surprises and the staff is up front about everything.

Tomorrow starts at 0600 with physicals but hopefully the day will go by faster than today.

Well, need to hit the books so until my next post, be safe.

  1. Wow... Looking forward to reading your updates. Thanks for the hard work to keep this blog alive so I can learn and perhaps understand if I made the right decision to stay at home. I keep second guessing myself. Zeke
